How to tailor your resume to each job in 15 minutes
Updated:
In short
Keep one base resume and tailor it to each posting in five steps: pull out the requirements, match them to your experience, reuse the posting's wording, reorder bullets by relevance and rewrite the summary. You change emphasis and words. The achievements stay real.
How do I pull the requirements from a posting?
Paste the posting into a document and mark what appears under the must-haves or more than once: skills, tools, certifications, the job title. Make a list of ten items in order of importance.
How do I match them to my experience?
For each requirement, look through your history for a real example. If you find one, note it. If you do not, do not invent it: a requirement you cannot cover can be mentioned in the cover letter as an area you are learning.
How do I reuse the posting's wording?
Use the same terms as the posting. If it asks for "Google Analytics 4", write exactly that. When a term has a short and a long form, include both, for example "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)".
Keywords belong in the experience bullets, next to what you did with them. A list of terms without context reads like filler.
How do I reorder, and what do I cut?
Move the bullets closest to the role to the top of each job. Shorten or drop unrelated bullets. Rewrite the summary every time, with the job title from the posting and two key skills.
The goal is for the recruiter to see the fit in the first ten seconds of reading.
Frequently asked questions
How long does tailoring a resume take?
About 15 minutes with a well-written base resume. Most of the time goes into pulling the requirements and rewriting the summary.
Is it fine to add a skill I only partly have?
Add only what you have actually used and can demonstrate in an interview. If needed, describe the honest level, for example "working knowledge".
Can I automate tailoring?
You can use a tool that compares the resume with the posting and shows the missing words, then decide what to add yourself. Joben has a feature that tailors a resume to a posting, inside your account.
